Phra Nang Beach
At approximately 540 square kilometres,
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand with 36
beaches. The nicer seashores are found on the
west coast and include Patong, Kamala and
Bang Tao, while the east coast, covered by
mangroves and rocky beaches, offer stunning
views of nearby islands. Phuket Town itself is
a marvel filled with gorgeous Sino-Portuguese
mansions, cafés and shophouses. Rassada Pier
is Phuket’s main departure point for ferry trips
to surrounding islands, including the idyllic
Phi Phi Islands, which were the setting for the
Leonardo DiCaprio movie, The Beach (2000).
Close to Phuket is Krabi province, filled with
some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.
Because of its limestone formations, Krabi has
become a major rock-climbing destination. Kra-
bi Town is a quaint location with its main beach,
Ao Nang, acting as the gateway to nearby
islands, accessible by ferry or speedboat.
Up north from Phuket is Khao Lak, a long-time
favourite for families. Severely destroyed
during the 2004 tsunami, it has since been
completely restored. Breathtaking waterfalls
and world-class snorkelling are just some
highlights of this beach haven.
Finally, on the east coast of Southern
